Minimalism – a Design Game?

چکیده

The challenge of designing “Simple Computing in an Age of Complexity” emphasizes the simple within the complex, focusing on the contradiction between the urge for ‘ease of use’ and the need for system complexity. Design must bridge this gap and make the complex appear simple – less is more. So far, many will agree. But, what exactly is the meaning of ‘less’ and ‘more’ in ‘less is more’, a less than self-explaining phrase? What aspects of a design need to be reduced in order to produce a better product? Following the assumption that a systematic analysis can help understand and plan design, minimalism is restudied in this paper. The existence of historic experience with the phrase ‘less is more’ in art, dance and music, and minimalism as the corresponding ‘style’, promises the extraction of generalizeable principles. Four notions of minimalism, namely functional, structural, constructional and compositional minimalism, are presented as a framework for the analysis and advancement of designs for interactive artefacts. The framework is presented in the form of a Minimal Design Game to encourage a playful approach towards reflection.

Contexts, Non-specificity, and Minimalism

Atlas (2007) argues that semantic minimalism (as defended by Cappelen & Lepore 2005) fails because it cannot deal with semantic non-specificity. I argue that there is a plausible version of minimalism—viz., situated minimalism—which doesn’t succumb to the non-specificity charge insofar as non-specificity can be dealt with at a postsemantic level. Thus, pragmatics plays no role when it comes to ...

Minimalism in human-computer interaction: development of a focused perspective on usability processes and design products

Minimalism is a concept used in many different literatures ranging from arts to mathematics. Developing a notion of minimalism for human-computer interaction and applying this notion to the products and processes of usability engineering efforts yields an alternative viewpoint. Minimalism lays ultimate value on freedom for the user; the interface grows through reduction. This attitude is inhere...

Keep Your Eyes on the Road and Your Finger on the Trigger - Designing for Mixed Focus of Attention in a Mobile Game for Brief Encounters

In this paper we present an initial user feedback study of the Road Rager prototype. Road Rager is a mixed reality game, designed to enable passengers in different cars to play against each other during an encounter in traffic. We are concerned with how to design a game which balances the player’s focus of attention between traffic and the computer interfaces, to provide a game which is compreh...

Layering a Minimal Interface

This paper reports on a software tutorial designed according to minimalist principles. The design extends minimalism beyond paper-based instructions to computer-based interface, and adopts a user-initiated layering technique to display relevant information. Evaluation confirms minimalist theory and shows that layering helps to alleviate some of the design tension between supporting learning and...
